Edison nj man criminally charged for fatal truck crash on local highway
Middlesex County prosecutors recently filed criminal charges against an Edison NJ man who allegedly caused a fatal truck accident on a township road.
The tragic auto accident occurred on July 25, 2016. The Edison resident was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram pickup truck on Route 27 in Edison NJ and traveling northbound as he approached Peterson Avenue. When the truck driver reached the intersection, he allegedly crashed into a 1995 BMW sedan being driven by a 93-year-old motorist who was in the process of making a left turn from the opposite side of the highway.
The violent collision destroyed the BMW and caused catastrophic injuries to the elderly driver. He was subsequently rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick NJ, but doctors were unable to save his life. The victim was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the New Brunswick medical facility.
Over the course of the past few months, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Edison Police Department have been conducting a joint investigation into the fatal collision on Route 27. Investigators eventually determined that the 20-year-old Edison NJ man was driving his truck at a “high rate of speed when he slammed into the victim’s vehicle.
After being arrested and charged, the driver was remanded to the Middlesex County Jail in North Brunswick Township on $35,000 bail. If and when the driver posts the $35K bail amount and secures his release from police custody, he will still have to address the criminal charges in Middlesex County Superior Court. The Edison man has been formally charged with vehicular homicide, a very serious criminal offense that could result in significant prison time if he is ultimately convicted.
Beyond that, the driver is also likely to face a wrongful death claim from the family members of the truck accident victim. That’s because New Jersey law holds individuals financially liable when they act negligently and cause another person’s death.
