Car accident victims’ families deserve compensation for losses, too
Personal injury can cause much greater financial stress than medical bills alone. It is not uncommon for those injured to also experience emotional suffering, loss of wages and even the loss of a spouse’s wages while he or she cares for the victim.
In 2010, a New Jersey woman was injured in a head-on collision, suffering permanent damage to her spine and neck. Last week, a Somerset County jury awarded $3.5 million to a Washington Township woman for her injuries. Of the $3.5 million, $2.75 million was for the harm and loss she suffered, and $750K was awarded to her husband for his resulting losses. A previous settlement offer of $50,000 from State Farm was rejected by the accident victim. The insurance company would not comment on their significantly smaller offer of compensation.
Accidents happen every day throughout New Jersey and countless people are injured, suffering brain injuries, spinal injuries and wrongful death. While an award as large as $3.5 million is certainly not common, a skilled personal injury attorney will fight hard to get compensation for all damages suffered by the client. This can sometimes mean figures in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars.
If physical injuries are such that the victim and his or her spouse is unable to work for an extended period of time, or even permanently, compensation should reflect this significant change in income. The purpose of personal injury compensation is to allow the victim to retain the same quality of life as prior to the accident.
