Bumble bee foods issues massive recall of tuna, cites consumer health concerns
Bumble Bee Foods recently recalled its popular brand of canned Chunk Light Tuna due to concerns about consumer health. Another company, Tri-Union Seafoods, also issued a tuna recall after learning that certain types of tuna it was selling may have been under-processed.
When announcing the recall in a public statement, Bumble Bee Foods said that the company became aware of manufacturing issues that specifically affected the products’ “commercial sterilization process. The end result, said company officials, was that some cans of tuna may have been contaminated by “spoilage organisms or pathogens.
At this time, there have been no reported illnesses stemming from the consumption of Bumble Bee tuna. However, the risk of adverse health consequences is very real. Steve Mavity, the company’s senior vice president of technical services and corporate quality, acknowledged as much, stating that consumption could result in “life-threatening illness.
The reason that both Bumble Bee Foods and Tri-Union Seafoods recalled different tuna products is that the companies reportedly used the same production facility in Georgia. The facility is operated by Tri-Union Seafoods to produce its Chicken of the Sea brand of tuna. The company shed further light on the specific dangers posed by the defective products when its own vice president of quality and compliance said that “a routine inspection led to the discovery of malfunctioning machinery.
Although the recall was issued voluntarily, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are closely monitoring the situation.
